| INVOLVING TERTIARY INSTITUTION STUDENTS IN SCHOOL DR. 0. T. IBENEME, okwelle p.c PUBLIC RELATIONS FOR ENHANCING TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION (TVE) DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA |
The study sought for reasons and ways through which Technical and Vocational Eduction (TVE) students in tertiary institutions could be involved in school public relations activities for enhancing TVE development in Nigeria. Two reserach questions were answered by the study and two 7lull hypotheses were tested at five percent level of significance. Questionaire was employed in collecting data for the study. Data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation for the research questions, while the student t-test statistics was used to analyze the hypotheses. Results revealed among other things that the respondents identfied some reasons and ways of their involvemnt in school public relations for enhancing TVE development in Nigeria. It was recommended that TVE institutiions should establish and fund public relations department with the roles of students well defined; as well as integrate public relations into technic/ teacher education progrmmes |

Low enrolment into Technical Colleges could be attributed to the neglect and low status accorded to Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) in Nigeria. Recognizing the indispensable role of TVE in technological development of any nation, the need to step up enrolment into the TVE programmes cannot be over-emphasized. There is therefore, the need for a school public relations strategy to be adopted by these • colleges with the aim of creating understanding and awareness of TVE among the public. This paper highlights the concept of school public relations activities, and their forms that can be employed in the colleges. Also, challenges and the way forward for sustainable school public relation activities that will improve enrolment in technical colleges are addressed |

| Incidence of Wastage in Technical Teacher Education Programme At Federal College of Education (Technical) Omoku Rivers State |
This study was designed to estimate percentage wastage in form of dropouts and repetition in a technical education teacher programme. The population comprised 191 students who enrolled into technical education programme of Federal College of Education (Technical) Omoku, in 2002/2003 academic session. Data used were obtained from the college records and analysis was carried out using percentages. The findings revealed 4 2. 08 percent drop-outs and 18.3 2 percent repeaters in a three year cycle. The greatest wastage occurred in year one programme of study. Based on the findings, implications to technical teacher production were drawn. It was recommended among other things that favourable condition of service of technology teachers should be put in place. |

| Vocational Guidance in Secondary Schools: The Case for a Cooperatie Staff Team Strategy |
The current focus in the Nigerian Philosophy of Education is on the development of the individual into a sound and effective citizen. The policy emphasis at the secondary school leve is to prepare students for useful living in the society; hence the curriculum is both academic and pre-vocational. In pursuance of this objective among other things, is the introduction of vocational guidance in secondary schools, aimed at assisting students to have a clear perception of the world of work while at school. The paper therefore highlighted the linkage between vocational guidance and vocational education as well as the vocational services needed for secondary school students. Finally, the paper discussed the concept of teamwork and suggested on how an effective vocational guidance programme could be achieved through a teamwork strategy involving some school personnel.
