EMERGING TECHNICAL SKILLS EXPECTED OF STUDENTS OF MOTOR VEHICLE MECHANIC WORKS IN THE MAINTENANCE OF TRANSMISSION SYSTEM FOR SUSTAINABLE MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT The study investigated the emerging technical skills expected of students of Motor Vehicle Mechanic Works in the maintenance of transmission system in Rivers State. The population of the study consisted of 153 respondents, comprising 140 Motor Vehicle Industry technicians and 13 Motor Vehicle Technical Teacher in Rivers state. No sampling was done considering the small and manageable size of the population. Four research questions were posed while four null hypotheses wereformulated. A self-developed instrument tagged” Emerging Technical skills of Motor Vehicle Mechanic Works Questionnaire (ETSMVMQ) was used to gather information for the study. This instrument was face validated by three experts, while reliability coefficient of 0.87 was obtained using Cronbach-Alpha reliability technique. The research questions were answered using the mean and standard deviation, whereas t-test statistics was used to test the four null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Following the analysis, 10 emerging technical skills needed in maintaining the transmission system were identified. It was recommended among other things that the government should embark on training and retaining technical educators of motor vehicle mechanic in technical colleges in order to upgrade their capacity. Towards Improving Teachers’ Competences in the Use of Instructional Materials in Senior Secondary Schools’ Physics in Port Harcourt Metropolis, Rivers State This study was undertaken to determine the strategies for improving the competence of Physics teachers in the utilization of instructional resources for effective Physics subject delivery in secondary schools in Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers state. The study sample was 87 physics teachers. A structured questionnaire was the instrument used to collect data for the study. The instrument was validated and a reliability coefficient of 0.83 obtained. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the research results. The findings revealed among other things that the use of instructional materials in physics subject delivery is adjourned beneficial to the teachers and the students. Some problems teachers encounter in instructional material usage such as insufficient instructional materials, finance and time constraints for improvisation of materials were identified. Based on the findings, the researcher therefore recommended some strategies for improving teacher’s competence in instructional materials utilization to include among others, teachers developing positive attitude towards the use and their improvisation of instructional materials. Vocational Teachers’ Perception of their Uses of Assessment in Government Technical Colleges in Rivers State The study was aimed at finding out opinions of vocational teachers of their uses of assessment in government technical colleges in Rivers State. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population consisted of 110 Vocational teachers (80 less experienced vocational teachers [0-5 years] and 30 highly experienced vocational teachers [6 years and above] in the four government technical colleges in Rivers Sate. No sample was done since the population size was considered manageable. Three research questions and three null hypotheses were generated and formulated respectively to guide the study. A questionnaire structured on a four point rating scale was used to collect data for the study. The instrument was face and content validated by five experts and the reliability coefficient of 0.80 was obtained with Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient method. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions, while t-test statistics was used to test the hypotheses. The findings of this study revealed among other things, that vocational teachers agree on the uses of assessment on academic achievement of students, there are types of valid and reliable assessment instruments/tools that vocational teachers should used to assess students and assessment process has a good impact on students in learning. Based on the findings, it was recommended that teachers should ensure that they use proper assessment instruments/tools to assess learning outcome. Okwelle, P. Chijioke (Ph.D) Agwi Vincent I. A. 2018
